Choosing the right hair colour

Don't choose a hair colour too much lighter  than your skin tone

I can't emphasise that enough because if there is one thing you need to know, it's that.

Okay before we start going into specific colours, it is useful to know whether your skin tone is 'warm' or 'cool'.  If you have a warm skin tone, it is generally a golden brown colour as opposed to a cool skin tone where your skin is very pale.  See below how Taeyang's skin tone is brighter than that of Jaejoongs? Okay found out whether your skin is warm or cool?  Read on.

Okay, so unless you are going for extreme colours (purple, etc), then there are 5 main colours for asian hairstyles; black, blonde, brown, orange and red. I will run through these colours and outline who they are suitable for.

Black:
Black hair generally goes well with any skin tone which is why so many people decide to stick with black.  Black hair makes your skin look paler because it goes without saying that it is darker than your skin.  So for people with paler skin, they may dislike the vast contrast between their hair colour and skin tone.  For a celebrity example, see Jaejoong - I think he looks better with lighter shades than with black hair, but let's be honest, he could pull off any cut or colour.

Brown:
Brown too, is quite adaptable to people of all skin tones because like black hair, it is darker than most people's skin tone.  However the only thing is that if you're quite tanned like me, it is best to go for the darker browns (chocolate, mahogany) and avoid the lighter browns (ash brown) because it will make you look even more tanned.  Also, it is best to avoid choosing a brown that is too close to your skin tone - it will look quite weird due to the uniformity of your skin and hair.  For those with lighter skin, generally the lighter browns look better, but the dark browns can also look very good.

Blonde:
In my opinion, blonde only looks good on pale Asians, like Jaejoong above.  It is just that the contrast can make it look very strange if you're more tanned and have bleached hair.  So for people with a similar skin tone, avoid blonde at all costs.  Also it is good not to go for platinum blonde unless you are special and are one of the few who can pull it off (mostly those with a cool skin tone) - I'd advise going for a darker blondish brown.

Red:
When choosing a colour that can get quite bright and vibrant (like red) it is important to take into consideration whether your skin is cool or warm.  I find it better for people with a warm skin tone to go for the darker deeper reds (burgundy) whilst those with cool skin colours can go for the more vibrant colours if they want to (although not many go for the really bright colours).

Orange:
It is advisable to follow the same set of guidelines for red hair (cool-bright/deep, warm-deeper), it is not as essential because orange is not as extreme on the colour spectrum.  This is because it mainstream orange hair cannot get as bright as red hair.  All in all orange is a good fit for anyone, just follow the one basic rule - don't choose a hair colour lighter than your skin tone.
